A Little About Us

Born in 2013 on the historic corner of Bend’s eclectic downtown, the Drake is a traditional-with-a-twist restaurant offering a delicious dining experience in a comfortable environment. From classic, nostalgic flavors to new and creative dishes, we cook food that is sometimes elegant, sometimes rustic and always honest. Just as important as the food is the way you feel when you're here. Drake is one part retro neighborhood café and one part elegant bistro – a place where you and your family can get comfortable and have a good time. Our welcoming staff goes to great lengths to make diners feel at ease and well taken care of. So you'll want to come back again and again.

Ted Swigert

Owner

With over 25 years’ experience in hospitality, Ted has a true understanding of customer service and a passion for developing and nurturing loyal guests and employees. He began his career as managing partner of the ACME restaurants and went on to work for hotel/restaurant groups including Kimpton, McCormick & Schmick’s and The Palm before launching the Drake. During spare moments, he enjoys golf and spending time with his wife, Jenna, and kids, Kate and Teddy.

John Gurnee

Culinary Director

A culinary foot soldier, fine dining veteran, common adventurer and fanatic of food and culture, John has always been drawn by the extraordinary scenery and colorful towns of the West. Commanding a team of budding, young chefs from a tiny kitchen on Bend’s most iconic corner, John brings exhilaration and passion from behind the stove. An advocate for improving local produce options and the installation of right-hand turn lanes in Deschutes County, John won’t be the last to deliberate the emerging culinary scene over one of Central Oregon’s best microbrews.

Bob Safford

Executive Chef

Bob began his professional career as a carpenter and cabinetmaker, cooking only as a hobby and to impress potential girlfriends. When looking for a new direction, he attended culinary school in San Diego and found his passion. He worked at several restaurants in Sacramento with his good friend chef John Gurnee, then spent 3 years at Taylor's Kitchen, where he honed his skills and creativity as sous chef. He landed in Bend last Spring, back behind the counter with his friend and mentor. When not in the kitchen at Drake, Bob enjoys snowboarding, biking, golfing, playing board games with his family, and sampling all the tasty brews Bend has to offer.
